Atm charges: Now withdrawing cash from ATM can be a bit heavy on your pocket. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the charge on withdrawing cash from ATM since 1 May 2025. Under the new rules, now if customers cross their free transaction limit, then a maximum fee of ₹ 23 will have to be paid on every additional transaction. Earlier this fee was ₹ 21 per transaction. This change is important news for those who often use ATM.

ATM free transaction limit

Currently, the limit of free transactions is as follows:

  • 5 free transactions at your bank’s ATM every month
  • At ATMs of other banks in metro cities: 3 free transactions
  • At ATMs of other banks in non-Metro cities: 5 free transactions

This rule applies to the savings account holders of all banks of the country. RBI has not made any changes in this free border. It is important to understand how these boundaries affect you based on your banking habits.

RBI’s new rule and changed fees of major banks

This rule of RBI applies to all commercial banks, regional rural banks (RRBs), cooperative banks, authorized ATM network operators, card payment network operators and white-labeled ATM operators! Here new ATM charges of major banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank are paid.

PNB ATM Fee

Customers will have to pay ₹ 10 plus tax after the free transaction limit at PNB ATM. At the same time, ₹ 23+tax in metro cities at ATMs of other banks and ₹ 11+tax in non-metro cities will have to be paid. According to the PNB website, “After the end of free transactions at other banks’ ATMs, ₹ 23 on financial transactions and ₹ 11 (except GST) on non-financial transactions will have to be paid.” These changes have come into force from May 9, 2025. This is important information for PNB customers.

HDFC Bank ATM Fee

According to HDFC Bank’s website, from May 1, the transaction fee for transactions above the free limit has been increased from ₹ 21 + tax to ₹ 23 + tax. HDFC Bank’s ATMs will be fees only for cash withdrawal, while non-financial transactions such as balance checks, mini statements and pin changes will remain free. On the other hand, non-HDFC Bank ATMs will be charged for cash withdrawal as well as non-financial transactions. Metro cities include Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. This will directly affect HDFC customers.

IndusInd Bank ATM Fee

IndusInd Bank has also changed its ATM fee. Now all savings, salary, NR and current account holders will have to pay a fee of Rs 23 per transaction for cash withdrawal from non-IndusInd Bank ATMs after free limit.

SBI ATM Fee

State Bank of India (SBI) has updated its ATM fee policy since February 1, 2025. Currently, all customers get 5 free transactions at SBI ATM and 10 free transactions at ATMs of other banks. If the average monthly balance of the customer is between ₹ 25,000 and ₹ 1 lakh, they get 5 free transactions at the ATMs of other banks. Those who have more than ₹ 1 lakh AMB get unlimited free transactions at SBI and other bank ATMs. After the free limit, ₹ 15 + GST ​​will be charged at SBI ATM and ₹ 21 + GST ​​per transaction at ATMs of other banks. SBI customers should pay special attention to this information.

ICICI Bank has not yet announced the ATM charge after the free limit. Currently, customers can do a total of 5 free transactions every month. After this, ₹ 21 is charged on every financial transaction and ₹ 8.50 + GST ​​on every non-financial transaction. ICICI Bank customers should monitor the upcoming announcements.
