Chennai: The city woke up at 05: 42 AM and the sun is likely to set at 6: 29 PM on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 28 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius, respectively. The humidity is expected to be around 77 per cent and the wind is expected to blow steadily from the Southwest at 11 km/h.

Rainfall is predicted in Tamil Nadu

The sudden rainfall on Monday gave residents respite from the heatwave. The Regional Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate rainfall in Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Puducherry, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal areas.

Rainfall is also predicted in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Kanchipuram, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Karu, Namakkal, and Ranipet districts of Tamil Nadu.

The temperatures are also likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius. The rainfall is likely due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea.

When is the monsoon expected in Chennai?

The monsoon is expected to arrive in Chennai between June 1 and June 5, 2025. This means that Chennai can expect the first rains of the Southwest monsoon around that time.

The southwest monsoon has advanced in Arabian Sea

According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin area, the central Bay of Bengal, and the south Bay of Bengal. The weather department forecasted that the monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala early, which will bring more rainfall to Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days.
