Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh: Panic and chaos gripped a stretch of highway in Kaushambi district on Thursday, May 15, after hundreds of Rs 500 currency notes were seen flying across the road.
Eyewitnesses said the sight resembled a “rain of money,” prompting passersby and local commuters to rush to the scene and collect as many notes as they could, some even risking their lives in the middle of traffic.
Robbery or Accident? Police Investigate Businessman’s Missing Bag
The money trail on the road reportedly followed an incident involving a businessman named Bhavesh, who was travelling from Varanasi to Delhi on a luxury bus. According to preliminary police information, the incident occurred when Bhavesh got off the bus for a meal at a roadside dhaba. It was then that miscreants allegedly fled with a bag he was carrying, which he claimed contained Rs 8-10 lakh.
While escaping, a portion of the cash appears to have spilled onto the road, sparking a frenzy. “About one and a half lakh rupees were seen scattered across the highway,” a Kokhraj police official said, adding that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether this was a planned robbery or an accidental loss due to carelessness.
Viral Video Shows Chaos as Public Scrambles for Notes
A video of the incident quickly made its way to social media, showing scores of people scrambling on the road to gather the scattered currency notes. Many were seen running in different directions, some even dodging moving vehicles in their desperation.
Police arrived at the scene soon after and began questioning the businessman. “We are yet to confirm whether this was a case of robbery or simply a case of money falling due to negligence,” officials said, as quoted by NDTV India. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the dhaba and surrounding areas as part of the probe.
