WWE’s first premium live event since WrestleMania 41—Backlash 2025 went down on Saturday night in St. Louis, Missouri, bringing a mix of thrilling action and head-scratching endings. The card featured just five matches, but each one delivered strong in-ring performances. Still, fans were left divided, as all four title matches ended with the champions retaining and some controversial finishes took away from the excitement.
Cena vs Orton
The main event brought back a classic rivalry: John Cena vs. Randy Orton. The match went nearly 30 minutes and was full of big moves, finishers, and not one, not two, but three referee bumps. Things took a strange turn when R-Truth made an unexpected appearance during the chaos. Cena ultimately got the win and grabbed a mic afterward, saying he’s still looking for real competition in WWE.
Jacob Fatu gets surprise assist
The night opened with a wild Fatal Four-Way Match for the United States Championship. Reigning champ Jacob Fatu defended his title against LA Knight, Drew McIntyre, and Damian Priest in what many are calling one of the best matches of the year so far. Just when it looked like things could go either way, Jeff Cobb made a surprise debut, helping Fatu hold onto his gold and adding a new layer to the ever-twisting Bloodline storyline.
Both Dominik Mysterio and Lyra Valkyria managed to retain their Intercontinental Championships, but neither win was clean. Distracted referees played a big role in both outcomes. Valkyria beat Becky Lynch, continuing Lynch’s recent losing streak and cementing her darker heel turn.
Meanwhile, Mysterio’s victory helped settle some tension in Judgement Day and pushed forward the ongoing El Grande Americano angle. In a non-title showdown, Gunther absolutely dominated Pat McAfee in a match that was more for fun than competition.
