The trade agreement with Britain has been delayed for many years. Earlier, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson set a deadline of Diwali 2022 for the deal.
After this, Rishi Sunak, the then Prime Minister of the then Indian origin, who came to power, tried to get a compromise. The agreement was finally reached on May 6, 2025 due to fear of mutual tariffs imposed by the US and increasing opposition to China in western countries. This is the first time that India has signed a widespread agreement with a western country. Earlier, India had signed such a partial agreement with Australia, but efforts to create a comprehensive agreement by incorporating it all areas have not yet been fulfilled. Due to the agreement with Britain, India is now in a profitable position to interact with the European Union. This trade agreement with Britain is particularly important for India’s service sector, as the service sector is a large part of the total production of Britain and the integration of India’s service sector with the UK service sector, which has now become stronger than this trade agreement, will provide a major engine for the development of India’s service sector.
India’s liquor lovers will not get any relief in prices
Although the duty on the import of whiskey in the trade agreement with Britain has been reduced from 150 percent to 75 percent, due to this relief, Indian liquor lovers are less likely to get alcohol at a low price, as experts believe that the policy of not giving the benefit of the consumer will not reduce the sale price by various states. Currently, alcohol is imported in three ways in India. First, bottles packed in Britain are imported. In this situation, the excise duty imposed by the state government will become a barrier to a decrease in the selling price. In the second type, alcohol is imported in bulk amounts and Indian mix companies use this imported alcohol for local brands. Such companies sell alcohol on very little profit margin. Therefore, it is possible that they do not benefit customers. In the third type, alcohol is imported and packed in bottles in India. The prices of such brands in India are much lower than global brands, so it is not necessary for manufacturing companies to reduce sales prices of such brands. Therefore, the only advantage to alcohol lovers will be that they will now have a wide range of British brands available to choose from the reduction in fee in trade agreement. It is noteworthy that a large amount of imported whiskey from abroad is used to mix in Indian whiskey. In ordinary Indian brands, such a whiskey imported from abroad is 2 to 3 percent, while in premium brands this ratio increases by 30 percent. Therefore, such brands are also known as India -made foreign liquor (IMFL).
