News India Live, Digital Desk: Controversy over layoffs in meta: Recently, Technology sector major company META (owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) has allegedly trimmed around 3,600 employees based on “low performance”. Among them was a senior machine learning engineer, who was proposed to join the company again only three days after being fired.
META’s controversial pruning process
In February 2025 this year, META trimmed about 5% of its global workforce employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the move as the process of “raising the level of performance” of the company. However, META has claimed that all decisions were taken based on the performance of the employees, but many former employees have questioned the transparency and fairness of the process.
Sudden change in performance rating
The engineer joined META in early 2024. His performance in the mid-year review was “At or Above Expectations”, and he was given “Meets All Expectations” in the January 2025 annual review. But a few weeks later, in the review of directors, this rating was suddenly done “Meets Most Expectations”. He suspects that this change was done not because of the performance, but under pressure to complete the target of the trimming.
Job was gone before transfer, then came to re -appointment proposal
The engineer was also selected for transfer to a more competitive team of the company, but was fired before the transfer. Three days later, by the same recruiter of the company, without interview, he was proposed to re -appoint. However, she rejected the proposal and said that she herself would find a better opportunity for her career.
Cleaning and disputed questions of the company
According to a META spokesperson, the entire process has been based on performance, and no rating was deliberately changed. He said that continuous high performance is part of the company’s culture. However, many employees have expressed concern after the incident, especially those who were on leave or the team were changing.
Such incidents arise the question that due to the performance based policies being adopted by Microsoft and other tech companies, is job safety and transparency in the tech industry being reduced now.
