News India Live, Digital Desk: Types of Yoga: The ancient cultural heritage yoga of India has become a major means of overall development of body, mind and soul on the world level today. The word ‘Yoga’ originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ is the process of establishing unity between the body, mind and soul. Maharishi Patanjali has called yoga as “preventing the instincts of the mind” in the Yogasutra, which means to control the mind and reach the inner peace and self-realization.
Major types of yoga and their benefits:
Yoga is not only a physical exercise, but a way to make lifestyle completely improved. It is effective in dealing with stress, diseases and challenges of modern life. Let’s understand the major types of yoga:
1. Hatha Yoga:
Hatha yoga focuses on physical postures (asana) and pranayama (breathing control). The word ‘Hatha’ symbolizes the balance of energy of Surya (‘H’) and Chandra (‘Th’). It makes the body healthy, strong and flexible. Asanas like Surya Namaskar, Bhujangasana, Tadasana bring energy and flexibility to the body, while pranayama such as Anulom-Villom and Kapalbhati makes the respiratory system strong.
2. Raj Yoga:
The meaning of Raj Yoga is ‘Best Yoga’, which controls the mind and leads to inner peace. It is based on meditation and mental discipline. Ashtanga Yoga (Yama, Niyam, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Meditation and Samadhi) mentioned by Maharishi Patanjali is the main part of Raj Yoga. This yoga removes stress, anxiety and negative thoughts. Swami Vivekananda described it as “the art of awakening the power of the mind”.
3. Bhakti Yoga:
Bhakti Yoga is the way to connect with God through love, reverence and dedication. In Bhagavad Gita, Bhakti Yoga has been called “complete dedication to God”. It strengthens the person at an emotional and spiritual level. Bhakti Yoga is practiced through bhajan, kirtan, worship and service. Narada Bhakti Sutra describes it as “ultimate love”, which frees the person from ego and worldly bonds.
4. Karma Yoga:
Karma Yoga emphasizes on doing selfless deeds and performing his duties without desire for fruits. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna said to Arjuna about Karma Yoga, “Karmanyevadhvad ma fleshu kadachan, ie, do karma but don’t worry about his fruit. Karma Yoga inspires the person to do every work as worship and service. Swami Vivekananda described it as “liberation of the soul through selfless karma”.
