News India Live, Digital Desk: Former US President Donald Trump has indicated that the scheduled deadline for the sale of the American branch of Tiktok can be re -extended if there is no agreement by June 19. In an interview with NBC News, Trump clarified that he wants Tiktok to complete the deal, but will also consider extending the deadline if necessary.
Why is Tiktok in controversies?
Tiktok’s original company is bytedance Chinese and the US has put a condition to sell the US unit of this app to an American company, citing security reasons. The US alleges that the Chinese government can acquire private data of American citizens through Tiktok, which can threaten national security.
The deal has been postponed twice
Tiktok’s American unit deal has already been postponed twice. Earlier it was to be completed by January 2024, then it was extended by April, and now the last date has been kept on June 2024. Under this deal, Tiktok’s American properties are to be transferred to a new American company, which will be controlled by American investors. However, China objected to the deal when the US implemented a heavy 145% tariff on Chinese goods.
Trump’s changed view
Initially, Trump was in favor of a complete ban on Tiktok, but now he has softened the attitude towards this app. Trump recently described Tiktok as an “interesting” app, which can help him reach young voters. However, Democrat MPs have criticized Trump’s decision to extend the deadline and said that they do not have the legal right to do so.
Bytedance and American companies busy in conversation
Meanwhile, bytedance is constantly interacting with American investors. Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon as well as famous YouTuber MRbeast are showing interest in buying Tiktok’s American branch. In such a situation, it has to be seen how long this deal takes final form.
