Satna (Madhya Pradesh): The Janpad Panchayat planted 1,000 saplings as part of Hariyali Mahotsav at Tehsil Tihara in 2001. Most of the saplings, which grew into trees in 25 years, have dried and fallen due to lack of care, sources in the Panchayat said.

The administration spent huge amounts on planting those saplings. But the money has gone down the drains. The purpose of planting saplings was to keep the Tehsil Tihara pollution-free and cool in summers. Because the trees dried and fell, planting saplings lost its purpose.

The Satna collector directed the officials to plant saplings to protect the environment. The Tehsil Tihara used to look green. The place has now lost its beauty.

The Janpad Panchayat also appointed a guard to protect the plants. According to chief executive officer of Janpad Panchayat Prabha Tekam, nobody has felled the trees.

But the Tehsil Tihara presents a different picture. Most of the trees have dried up and fallen. Someone may have cut off a few trees. According to sources in Janpad Panchayat, the rest of the trees need immediate care.

It was the duty of the officials of Janpad Panchayat to care for the trees, sources said. Because the officials have failed to protect the trees, the area has also lost its scenic beauty, sources said.
