Story of Sita Navami (Story):
First story (King Janaka Wali):
It is written in the Ramayana that once Mithila (which is now in Bihar), there was a terrible drought. King Janak got very upset. Then a sage advised him to perform a yajna and run a plow on the earth itself. King Janak performed the yajna and then started running plows in the field. Then his solution got stuck in one place. He saw that the plow was trapped in a beautiful gold box. When the chest opened, a very beautiful girl was found in it. King Janak had no children, so he accepted the girl as his daughter and named her Sita (because the pointed part of the plow is also called ‘Sita’). The day mother Sita was found was the date of Vaishakh Shukla Navami. Since then this day is celebrated as Sita Navami. Later, mother Sita was married to Lord Rama and had to go to exile for 14 years with Ram ji. He had two sons named Love and Kush.
Second story (Vedavati Wali):
Another story is that mother Sita was Vedavati in the previous life. Vedavati was a very beautiful ascetic who wanted to get Lord Vishnu as her husband. One day Ravana saw him and tried to misbehave with him. Unhappy with this, Vedavati jumped into the fire, but before he died, she cursed Ravana that in the next life she would be born as her daughter and would cause her death. Later Ravana and Mandodari had a daughter. Ravana threw him into the sea for fear of curse. Varuni, the goddess of the sea, handed her over to Prithvi Mata and Prithvi Mata gave the girl to King Janak. In this way Sita ji got from the earth to King Janak. Just as mother Sita appeared from the earth, so did her end to the earth.
