Former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee shared a shocking video on Wednesday from her X handle, showing a man beating a woman with a broom-like object. The woman can also be seen trying to snatch the broom from the man.
Sharing the video, the BJP leader said, “The person from this particular community is a doctor by profession at Murshidabad Medical College and also a professor at a charitable trust (Asifa Trust). This individual is publicly abusing his first wife and has also entered into a second marriage.”
Calling for social distancing, she added, “We strongly condemn this person’s violence against women in front of society. Maintain social distance and awareness from such individuals.”
According to X user Debajit Sarkar, the man seen in the video is Dr Year Ali, a physician at Murshidabad Medical College.
Meanwhile, a purported confession from the accused doctor has surfaced online, in which he claims that the incident took place on March 12.
Justifying the violence, the post states, “When disobedience occurs, one may act according to Allah’s command.”
The doctor allegedly quoted a controversial verse from the Qur’an (Surah An-Nisa 4:34), which says:
“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given one more strength than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore, righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in the husband’s absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part you fear disobedience, admonish them, refuse to share their beds, and beat them; but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means of annoyance. Indeed, Allah is Most High, Great.”
