Expenditure on Military: Global military expenses increased by 9.4%; India is the fifth largest defense spending country in the world

News India Live, Digital Desk: Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released the latest figures related to global military expenses on Monday, 28 April 2025. According to this report, in the year 2024, there has been an increase of about 9.4 percent in military expenditure across the world. The US still ranks first in the world in terms of military expenses, while China finished second, Russia third, Germany fourth and India fifth. The total expenditure of these five countries is equal to about 60 percent of global military expenses.

India vs Pakistan: Big difference in military expenditure

According to the report, in 2024, India’s military expenses rose 1.6 percent to about 86.1 billion (Rs 7.19 lakh crore). On the other hand, neighboring country Pakistan spent a total of $ 10.2 billion (Rs 85,170 crore) on its army. In this way, India’s military expenses are about nine times more than Pakistan. Pakistan is at number 29 in the global rankings of military expenditure.

China’s continuous increase

China has also increased its defense spending by 7.0 percent, increasing its military expenses to around $ 314 billion. This is the third consecutive decade when China’s defense spending has seen a steady increase.

Record growth in Europe

There has been a huge increase in military expenditure in European countries including Russia. European countries made a total of 17 percent increase in military expenditure in 2024, which has now increased to about $ 693 billion. Europe has been a major contribution to an increase in global military spending.

Rafale aircraft deal between India-France

Meanwhile, India signed an agreement on 28 April 2025 for the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets with France. Under this agreement, India will get 22 single-seater and 4 double-seater Rafale aircraft, whose supply will be completed by the year 2031-32.
