Ottawa, Canada: New Democratic Party (NDP) Leader Jagmeet Singh, a Khalistani supporter, announced his resignation after losing his Burnaby seat in Monday’s (April 28) federal election.

His defeat marked a devastating blow to the party as it teeters on the brink of losing the official party status in the House of Commons. However, Singh maintained that he would remain in the role until a new leader is chosen.

Have a look the official statement he released after the results:

Burnaby Loss, Party Collapse

Singh delivered his concession speech shortly after 12:30 AM (GMT) Tuesday (April 29) morning, acknowledging the NDP’s sharp decline and his own personal loss in Burnaby, a riding he had held since 2019. Liberal candidate Wade Chang was leading in the race, followed by Conservative James Yan.

The party was projected to win fewer than a dozen seats, far short of the 12 required for official party status in the House. Several high-profile NDP MPs also appeared to be heading for defeat as early results came in. “Obviously, I’m disappointed that we could not win more seats but I’m not disappointed in our movement,” Singh said during his speech.

The campaign proved challenging for the NDP from the outset, with Singh struggling to gain traction. The central question for many voters became who could best stand up to US President Donald Trump and protect Canadian sovereignty—an area where polls showed Canadians favouring Liberal Leader Mark Carney or Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Singh’s Farewell Remarks

In his farewell remarks, Singh congratulated Carney, noting the weight of the prime ministerial responsibility. “It is an important job to protect Canada’s sovereignty from the threats of US President Donald Trump,” he said.

Singh also defended his record of supporting the previous Liberal minority, citing achievements like pushing for dental care and pharmacare. “We are only defeated if we stop fighting,” he added. “We’re only defeated when we believe those that tell us that we can never dream of a better Canada, a fairer Canada, a more compassionate Canada.”

Singh concluded his speech by saying, “I know that we will always choose hope over fear, and optimism over despair, and unity over hate.”
