The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Government and directed to stop sharing or showing pornographic materials on OTT and social media platforms. The Supreme Court, while hearing a PIL, has directed the Central Government to take appropriate steps to ban the pornographic materials shared on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Ulu, ALT and OTT platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter).
The Supreme Court reacted strongly to these platforms, saying that it is a social responsibility to appear in the court during the hearing of cases of pornographic material shown on Over the Top (OTT) and social media platforms. The PIL filed in the court has demanded a ban on such obscene material, in which the court has directed the Central Government to take appropriate action in this regard.
The PIL filed in the Supreme Court also demanded that the National Material Control Authority (NCC) should monitor and regulate the materials to be strengthened on these platforms so as not to spread vulgarity through OTT and social media platforms.
The central government has already implemented several rules in this regard and has promised to make them more strict in future. Accepting the argument of the Center, the court said that it wants to stay away from both the executive and the judiciary.
However, this is not the first case that a complaint has been made about pornographic material on OTT and social media platforms. The Central Government’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) controls the material aired on OTT. These rules not only apply to OTT platforms, but are also applied to online news platforms, social media platforms and other materials on online platforms.
