Delhi: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandavia said on Thursday that the National Sports Federations will not be allowed to divert attention from athletes. He urged the federations to end factionalism and nepotism to ensure that India’s effort to host the 2036 Olympics was successful. On the occasion of launching the first set of certificates in Digilocker, the Sports Minister expressed his clear views on issues related to the National Sports Federations.
Digilocker is a cloud-based platform to store documents, certificates and credentials, making it easier to share and certify documents. Addressing representatives of the 40 National Sports Federations, Mandavia said that he does not like to intervene in NSF, but does not mean that he would be allowed to distract from the government’s policy of focusing on athletes. He said that I have talked to many groups of various feds and I have asked them to work on it so that the players do not face trouble. Players should not be harmed.
Mandavia said that you have to take care of the players and when factionalism occurs, they are harmed. I will not let this happen. NSF will have to be held accountable. Mandavia was probably referring to sports federations such as boxing, football, wrestling and horse riding, whose internal conflicts have reached international federations and courts. Currently boxing cases are being seen by a ad hoc committee, and issues related to the current administration of football and horse riding are in court. Wrestling troubles have recently ended, as the Sports Ministry has lifted the suspension imposed due to a violation of the Sports Code.
