Oldest highway of India: India’s oldest highway: Grand Trunk Road spread from Chandragupta Maurya to Afghanistan

In the economic and social development of any country, the transport system acts as a spinal cord.
Roads not only connect people to each other, but also speed up activities like business, education, health and tourism.
While today state-of-the-art expressway and highway are being constructed in India, there is also a road which is considered to be the oldest highway in India.

Which is the oldest highway in India?

The oldest highway in India is – GT Road (GT Road).
The initial construction of this historic road was done in the reign of Chandragupta Maurya (322–298 BC).
Later in the 16th century, Sher Shah Suri got this road confirmed and developed it systematically.

Contribution of Sher Shah Suri

Sher Shah Suri not only made the GT Road a firm, but also built Kos Minar, Trees, and Sarai on its sides.

  • Kos Minar was made to measure the distance, a curse = 3.22 km

  • In the inn, there used to be room for passengers, enclosures for animals and well for water

  • Kos Minar can be seen even today on Delhi Zoo and Mathura Road

  • The Sarai of Azimganj, which is located in the Delhi Zoo, is a sign of that era

GT Road’s geographical limit

The Grand Trunk Road is not limited to India only.
This historic road starts from Bangladesh to Afghanistan. Its route is as follows:

Bangladesh → West Bengal (Bardhaman, Asansol) → Bihar (Sasaram) → Uttar Pradesh (Prayagraj, Aligarh) → Punjab → Punjab (Amritsar) → Pakistan (Lahore, Rawalpindi) → Afghanistan

History of Names: Changed Name over time

GT Road was known from time to time by different names:

  • Uttarapath (ancient name)

  • Road-e-Azam (Mughal period)

  • Emperor road

  • The long road

  • And finally it got a modern name – Grand Trunk Road

Its contribution to today’s National Highway System

The NH-1, NH-2, NH-5 and NH-91 present in India are considered part of the Grand Trunk Road.
Even today this road is an important part of the economy and connectivity of North India.
