Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Modi government for imposing cess on petrol and diesel despite a fall in global crude oil prices, alleging that the central government has collected Rs 38.89 lakh crore as cess revenue since 2014. The central government has grabbed the rights of the states by not giving this cess to the states.

Kharge wrote in a post on X that the cooperative federalism of the Modi government means the end of federalism. He alleged that despite the international price of crude oil reaching a 47-month low, the Modi government has increased the central excise on both petrol and diesel by Rs 2-2.

This year, the Modi government will earn Rs 1.47 lakh crore from the total cess on petrol and diesel, while it will earn Rs 28,000 crore from the increase of Rs 28,000 crore on both petrol and diesel from two each.

However, no state including BJP ruled states will get anything from this amount. It is noteworthy that for some time, the state has been demanding more stake in cess on petrol and diesel from the central government.

From 2014 to December 2024, the Modi government has collected Rs 38.89 lakh crore by taxing petrol, diesel and petroleum products.

He further said that the Modi government will not use revenue of Rs 5.7 lakh crore collected from various cess and overloads from 2019-20 to March 2026.
