One tourist has been killed and 12 others, including both tourists and locals, were injured in a terror attack at the popular hill station of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday. Authorities fear the death toll may rise.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Jeddah, spoke with Shah over the phone and directed him to take all suitable measures in response to the situation. The Prime Minister has also asked the Home Minister to visit the attack site.
According to reports, 2-3 terrorists dressed in army uniform opened fire on tourists who were horseback riding in the Baisran area around 2:30 p.m. Baisran is a small meadow located 3-4 kilometers from Pahalgam’s main market, accessible only by horse as there is no motorable road to the location.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media show victims lying in pools of blood at the scene of the attack.
The injured have been transported to Pahalgam hospital, with three critically wounded victims subsequently transferred to Srinagar for specialized medical treatment, according to news agency IANS.
Security forces have launched a massive search operation in the area as they attempt to locate and apprehend the terrorists responsible for this attack.
Home Minister Amit Shah has called a high-level meeting following the attack.
