Assistant Police Inspector Ashwini Bidre-Gor (37) of the Human Rights Cell of Navi Mumbai was missing since 15 April 2016. The crime was registered on the basis of the complaint of Bidre’s brother Anand Bidre. The police registered a case of kidnapping against Kurundkar, his driver Bhandari and his friends Gyan Dev Patil and Phatnikar. Later, a detailed investigation also added the charge of murder. According to the police, there were extramarital affairs between Kurundkar and Bidre. Kurundkar, with the help of other people, killed Bidre at Mukund Plaza in Bhayandar on 15 April 2016. His body was cut into pieces and placed in the fridge and later filled in two trucks and a sack and thrown into the Vasai Bay.

Ashwini Bidre was preparing for competitive examinations since the year 2000. He married Raju Gore in the year 2020. Meanwhile, he was introduced to Kurundkar. Bidre Ratnagiri came to Ratnagiri after getting promotion in 2013. Kurundkar often used to visit him here. The court criticized the police for delay in registering a case of murder. Preliminary investigation was also interrupted due to political pressure. The judge criticized the officials responsible for the delay and demanded disciplinary action against him. The court said that this has delayed the case by one year.

When Kurundkar was awarded the President’s Medal for commendable service on the Republic Day of 2017, the court expressed surprise that the police department suggested his name for the prestigious medal somehow despite his involvement in a murder case. The court questioned the veracity of the police. The court also suggested that an inquiry should be done against the officials who suggest Kurudkar’s name.

Kurundkar, who was working in Thane Rural Police at the time of the incident, was arrested on 7 December 2017. He was then dismissed from service. Currently, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sangeeta Shinde Alphonso, posted in Palghar, investigated.
