When it comes to nutrition-packed superfoods, Moringa is steadily rising to the top of the list for Indian households. Rich in nutrients and rooted deeply in traditional Indian diets, this plant has long been known for its healing properties. And now, with the nod of even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it’s making headlines once again.
On the recent episode of the Figuring Out With Raj Shamani podcast (aired April 19), Mihir Gadani, co-founder of Oziva Nutrition, called moringa one of the top three superfoods Indians should consume regularly.
‘Even PM Modi drinks moringa soup’
While sharing his insights on essential ingredients that support health and wellness, Mihir emphasised moringa’s benefits, calling it a must-have for Indians.
He stated, “Moringa is packed with antioxidants, which contribute to the protective mechanisms in your body. Even PM Modi drinks moringa soup. But the problem is that it is slightly bitter in taste, so extracts of moringa can be used.”

Let’s take a closer look at the scientifically backed benefits of moringa and why it deserves a place in your daily routine.
Health Benefits of Moringa (Drumstick)
Nourishes skin & hair
Studies suggest that moringa contains compounds that may help wounds heal faster and reduce oxidative stress on the skin. Moringa seed oil may also support stronger, healthier hair.
Protects the liver
Compounds in moringa have shown promise in reducing fat buildup in liver cells and promoting enzymes that metabolise fat. Though these findings are based on lab studies, they hint at moringa’s potential to support liver health, especially in cases of fatty liver disease.
Anti-cancer properties
Moringa is rich in niazimicin, a compound known to suppress the development of cancer cells. Some studies have suggested that extracts from moringa leaves and bark could potentially fight off cancer in the liver, colon, and breasts. However, clinical trials are still needed.
Soothes digestive issues
From constipation to ulcer prevention, moringa may help improve gut health. Animal-based studies have shown moringa can reduce stomach acid secretion, relieve inflammation, and possibly even prevent colon cancer.
Fights bacterial infections
Laboratory tests show that moringa may be effective against foodborne bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, both of which are known to cause food poisoning.
Boosts mental well-being
Its antioxidant content might also protect the nervous system, potentially helping with disorders like Alzheimer’s, depression, and neuropathic pain.
Improves heart health
Moringa contains quercetin and other anti-inflammatory agents that help prevent plaque buildup, lower cholesterol, and protect the heart. However, more human studies are needed to confirm these effects.
Helps manage diabetes
Moringa leaf extract may support insulin levels and protect against organ damage linked to diabetes, though the most recent studies show mixed results and suggest further investigation is required.
Regulates blood pressure
A 2021 study revealed that eating cooked moringa leaves helped lower blood pressure in healthy individuals. However, more extensive human trials are needed for conclusive evidence.
Enhances eye health
With its rich beta-carotene content, moringa contributes to better vision and helps prevent eye conditions, according to early findings.
