The court proceedings have once again taken a new turn in an old ransom case associated with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her family. The case was registered in 2003 and includes the name of underworld don Fazal-ur-Rahman alias Fazalu. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 due to the absence of lawyers and the incomplete procedure in the hearing in Surat’s court recently on 11 April.
What is the matter?
In 1998, Shilpa Shetty signed a one -year advertising contract with a Surat saree company Praful Saree. Even after the contract ended, the company did not stop running Ed. Shilpa sent a legal notice on this. It is alleged that after this, Shilpa’s parents demanded Rs 80 lakh from the company.
In 2003, the owner of the company Pankaj Aggarwal lodged a police complaint that he received a threatening call from Underworld Don Fazalu from Malaysia, demanding Rs 2 crore.
Whose names are in FIR?
Those who were accused in this case include:
- Shilpa Shetty’s parents Surendra and Sunanda Shetty
- Personal secretary Dilip Palskar
- Don Fazal-ur-Rahman alias Fazalu and his two companions
All of them have a case under sections 385, 386, 387 and 34 of the IPC, including ransom, threats and criminal conspiracy.
What happened so far?
- Charges were framed in 2010 and the hearing started from 2013.
- Meanwhile, Shilpa’s father Surendra Shetty and secretary Dilip Palskar have passed away.
- Many audio clips, including threatening conversation, have been presented as evidence in court.
April 11 hearing and fine
- Sunanda Shetty’s lawyers were not present on the day of hearing, in his place a junior lawyer came as ‘proxy’.
- Similarly, Junior lawyers were also present in place of Fazalu’s lawyer, but the court exempted him for medical reasons.
- Sunanda’s lawyer’s Power of Attorney was not signed, due to which the court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
Fazalu’s past
- Fazal-ur-Rahman alias Fazalu hails from Darbhanga in Bihar and is connected to the underworld.
- He was also an accused in the kidnapping case of Gautam Adani in 1998, in which a ransom of Rs 15 crore was sought.
- In 2018, he was acquitted due to lack of evidence, but is now in India and is running out on bail.

The next hearing will be held on 30 April 2025, in which important witnesses and evidence related to the case will be discussed.
