After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, the Congress party has started protests across the country. Congress workers demonstrated against the central government at the party office in New Delhi on Wednesday. Along with this, the party staged a protest in front of ED offices at the state headquarters and district level and in front of the central government offices in the respective states.
Heavy security has been deployed at the party office at Akbar Road. Congress leader Udit Raj said, “We want to go among the public, because there is no one greater than the public. We want people to understand that the charge sheet filed against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is completely baseless and illegal.” At the same time, Congress leader Amit Chavda said that all these people are being focused to delete the real issues of the country and to threaten the opposition. Institutions like ED and CBI are being used to suppress the opposition.
The Congress had announced that protests would be held in front of the state headquarters of the Enforcement Directorate on 16 April and the central government offices at the district level. All India Congress Committee General Secretary KC Venugopal issued a statement calling all Congress workers, leaders and supporters to protest against the alleged political vengeance being made by the Modi government.
Congress accuses him as a state sponsored crime:
In the statement, Venugopal said, “The Indian National Congress clearly condemns the National Herald’s property in an arbitrary and unjust manner by the Modi government and filing a charge sheet against the party leadership. It is not a matter of a legal process; it is a state -sponsored offense in the form of rule of law.” He said, “The complaint filed against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court is a terrible misuse of power. It is a direct attack on the idea of the democratic opposition and a lewd attempt by the ruling rule to give political threats by the ruling rule.”
Venugopal also said that the Congress party will not sit silent and they will fight for the values of truth, justice and democracy. He called upon all the state Congress committees to protest on 16 April.
What is said in ED’s charge sheet:
The ED has said in its charge sheet in the National Herald case that Congress leaders had hatched a criminal conspiracy to grab its original company AJL’s assets worth Rs 2,000 crore and for this they transferred 99 percent shares to their private company Young Indian for just Rs 50 lakh, with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi dominated shareholders. In the prosecution complaint filed under various sections of the Money Laundering Prevention Act (PMLA) in the court of Special Judge Vishal Gogan, the federal investigative agency has made Sonia Gandhi the accused number one and Rahul Gandhi accused number two.
On April 9, Congress leader Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, two companies Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Private Limited and Sunil Bhandari of Dotex Merchandise have also been accused. The ED has filed a charge sheet under Sections 44 and 45 of the PMLA under Section 70 (crime by companies) along with the offense of money laundering. The ED has demanded punishment for the accused under Section 4 of the PMLA, which can be sentenced to seven years. The court has decided to hear the case on 25 April.
This is probably the first time the ED’s money laundering case stems from taking cognizance of a personal complaint and issuing summons to the accused to start the case.
