Mumbai: In the hope of rapid increase in power demand during summer, the country’s coal imports increased to ten months high in March this year to 14.1 million tonnes. Government figures show a ten percent increase in imports compared to February.

This year, the government is planning to increase coal -based power generation due to the forecast of summer being hot this year.

Keeping in mind the high demand for electricity, it has been directed to operate imported coal -based power plants at full capacity.

The coal stock in power plants is currently 14 percent more year-on-year and 60 percent more than in 2023. As of 31 March, coal stock was 58.0 million tonnes.

According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, the temperature of the country is expected to be higher than normal during the period of April to June this year, so the demand for electricity is expected to increase.

The demand for electricity between April and June is expected to increase by about seven percent.
