Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday made an important announcement regarding the state’s autonomy. He said that a high -level committee will be formed under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court Judge Kurien Joseph, which will investigate the relations between the central and the state governments in detail. Stalin alleged that the central government is gradually reducing the rights of the states, and the purpose of this committee is to ensure the autonomy of the state.
Committee proceedings and reports
The Chief Minister said in the state assembly that the committee will submit its interim report by January 2026, while its final report will be presented within two years with recommendations. The committee will also have former bureaucrat Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former Vice President of State Planning Commission M Naganathan. Stalin also stated that the committee would study subjects which were previously placed in the state list, but now they have been included in the concurrent list. He gave the example of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET), which is out of the jurisdiction of the state.
Front also opened on delimitation
The announcement was made when MK Stalin opened a front against the central government on the delimitation issue on 22 March. He also called a meeting of the opposition, which included the Chief Minister and opposition leaders of several states, but the Trinamool Congress, the party of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was out of this meeting. The first meeting of the Joint Action Committee of the Opposition was held in Chennai to discuss the delimitation issue, which was present in Kerala, Telangana, Punjab Chief Minister and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivkumar and representatives of other opposition parties. Apart from this, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also reached Chennai.
