What is election bond?
The Election Bond Scheme 2017 was introduced by the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. This is a type of promissory note. It is also called a bank note. Any Indian citizen or company can buy it, and it can also be funded by political parties.
Election bond scheme was launched in the year 2018 to make political funding corruption free. The government described the scheme as an important ‘electoral reform’ for moving towards ‘cashless-digital economy’.
Why did the election bond plan get into controversy? Inaugurating the scheme in 2017, Arun Jaitley claimed that this would bring transparency in the financing and election system of political parties. This will control black money. At the same time, those who oppose it say that since the identity of the person buying electoral bonds is not revealed, it can become a source of use of black money in elections.
The petitioner, ADR (Association for Democratic Reforms) claimed that such electoral financing would promote corruption. Some companies provide funds to the parties whose governments benefit them from unknown means.
