Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded the country’s highest civilian honor ‘Mitra Vibhushan’ from Sri Lanka. This honor was awarded to him by Sri Lankan President Anuraa Kumar Disanayake. This is the 22nd international honor given by a foreign nation to Prime Minister Modi.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi said, “It is a matter of pride for me to honor the ‘Mitra Vibhushan’ on behalf of the President of Sri Lanka today. It is not only mine, but the honor of 140 crore Indians. It is a symbol of historical relations and deep friendship between India and Sri Lanka.”
President’s statement
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Disanayake, while honoring, said, “The Sri Lankan government has decided to provide ‘Mitra Vibhushan’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is fully worthy of this honor.”
Importance of ‘Mitra Vibhushan’ medal
The ‘Mitra Vibhushan’ honor reflects the intimate and historical relations of India-Sri Lanka. The Dharma Chakra is inscribed in this medal, which symbolizes the shared Buddhist cultural heritage of both countries. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi was given a grand welcome at Independence Square in Colombo. Principal member of the President’s cabinet and Prime Minister Harini Amasuriya was also present at the reception.

PM Modi’s acceptance globally
Prime Minister Modi is the first Indian leader who has been awarded his highest civilian honor by so many countries. These honors are evidence of his diplomatic leadership, global cooperation, environmental protection and international recognition of peace efforts. From neighboring countries to global powers, their impressive image is clearly visible.
Sri Lanka Travel and Bimstech Conference
This is Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka after 2014. This is his first visit to President Disanayake after taking charge. PM Modi reached Colombo from Bangkok after attending the BIMSTEC summit. President Disanayake invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Sri Lanka during his visit to India in December last year.
The Government of Sri Lanka has described this visit as an important moment for India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi is the first foreign head of state to be hosted by President Disanayake.
