Taxi Driver Arrested For Kidnapping
A 32-year-old taxi driver was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a maintenance supervisor and forcing him to pay Rs. 1,119 as compensation for a minor vehicle collision in a road rage incident. The incident happened on Thursday.
Aquib Shaikh was caught by the Vakola police in Kurla on Thursday after investigators traced the registration number of the cab he was driving, which had been borrowed.
As per the FIR, the incident occurred on March 28 around 1 PM when Venkatesh Kounder, 26, a supervisor with Indu Earthmovers, was transporting a poclain machine in a company truck from Kurla to DN Nagar in Andheri West. Shaikh, driving a taxi, attempted to overtake from the wrong side, leading to a minor collision near Air India Colony in Santa Cruz East.
Although Shaikh was at fault, he allegedly escalated the situation by forcing Kounder into his cab, claiming they were going to the police station. Instead, Shaikh drove him to Chembur, where he used Kounder’s phone to contact his employer and demand money for the damaged side mirror.
Shaikh then threatened to involve his associates and warned Kounder of serious consequences unless he paid. Fearing for his safety, Kounder transferred Rs. 1,119 via GPay before being released near Sion Circle.
