Mumbai – The court has allowed 21 properties worth Rs 167.85 crore in the New India Cooperative Bank embezzlement case to attach 21 properties. This is the first such incident in the city since the new criminal law came into force.

After getting the magistrate’s approval on Wednesday, the Economic Offenses Branch of the Mumbai Police has started the process of attaching the property.

These properties include SRA project of Rs 150 crore in Charkop, whose ownership is with one builder Dharmesh Paun, one of the arrested accused.

An official of the Economic Offenses Branch said that for the first time such action has been taken under Section 107 of the Indian Civil Protection Code. Under this section, the police can directly or indirectly confiscate any property earned or obtained through criminal activity.

In response to the petition of the Economic Offenses Branch, the court has allowed 21 properties of seven flats, a shop and 21 properties of a bungalow of former bank general manager Hitesh Mehta.

Other properties include accused Kapil Deedia’s flat, Unnahalthan Arunachalam shop and businessman Javed Azam’s flats in Patna in Bihar and Jadukan in Madhubani.

These people are among the eight accused arrested by the Economic Offenses Branch in the Rs 122 crore bank embezzlement case.
