BIMSTEC Summit: Prime Minister Modi on a visit to Thailand, regional cooperation will be discussed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for Thailand on a two -day visit on Thursday. During this visit, he will discuss bilateral issues with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Partagatarn Shinavatra and will attend the sixth Bimstech summit.

On reaching Thailand, Prime Minister Modi will be given a grand welcome by the Indian community. He will meet Prime Minister Shinavatra at the Government House, where he will also be formally welcomed. On Thursday evening, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with leaders of BIMSTEC countries on important issues like maritime cooperation.

Confirmation of Ministry of External Affairs

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal informed that Prime Minister Modi has left for Thailand and Sri Lanka. First he will take an official visit to Thailand and take part in the BIMSTEC summit, after which he will go on a state visit to Sri Lanka.

Other leaders will also meet

Leaders of Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan will participate at the BIMSTEC summit. During this, Prime Minister Modi will also meet Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus and Myanmar military leader Min Aung Having.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nicornadej Balanakura said that Myanmar leaders will attend the meeting day. Recently, a powerful earthquake in Myanmar has caused heavy destruction in many areas including Mandalay.

Importance of BIMSTEC Conference

This summit is very important in terms of direct meeting of leaders of BIMSTEC countries. The last time BIMSTEC leaders had a direct meeting in 2018 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The summit held in Colombo in March 2022 concluded through a video conference.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is considered an important step for India to strengthen relations with South and South-East Asia. The BIMSTEC platform is playing an important role in regional cooperation, maritime security and promoting trade.
