Jose Mourinho caused a stir after Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray in the fiery Istanbul derby on Wednesday. Following the match, Mourinho appeared to pinch the nose of Galatasaray’s coach, Okan Buruk, as he walked off the pitch. Buruk immediately collapsed, clutching his face.
Fenerbahce midfielder Mert Yandas and Galatasaray’s Kerem Demirbay and winger Baris Yilmaz were handed red cards for their role in a fight between the two benches during the last few minutes of the game.
According to multiple media reports the Turkish Football Federation is now reviewing the incident, and Mourinho could face further consequences for his actions. Buruk, who did not attend the post-match press conference, later described the incident, saying, “He squeezed my nose from behind while I was going on. There was a slight scratch. It’s not a very nice or stylish thing.”
After the match, Galatasaray mocked Mourinho with a post on social media, featuring a smiling Buruk with the caption, “You should not attack, you should digest.” Another post featured a cartoon version of Mourinho with the words, “Galatasaray drives you crazy.”
Jose Mourinho disciplinary issues in past
This is not the first time Mourinho has found himself in controversy. Earlier this year, Galatasaray accused him of making racist remarks about their bench, for which he was handed a four-match suspension. He has also faced other disciplinary issues in the past, including an eye-poking incident in 2011 while managing Real Madrid.
Whats next for Galatasary?
After a goalless draw between the two teams in the Turkish Super League two months back, Galatasaray said that they would start criminal proceedings against Mourinho following claims that he made racist statements.
