New Delhi: The much awaited Waqf Amendment Bill related to Waqf properties will be introduced in the Lok Sabha at 12 noon today. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has fixed 8 hours to discuss this, after which the bill is likely to be passed in the House. There has been a tense atmosphere between the government and the opposition regarding this bill, and both sides are ready with their respective strategy.
Solidarity in NDA
Complete preparations have been made by the government to pass this bill. The parties involved in the NDA have announced to come forward in support of the bill, showing solidarity.
The major parties supporting so far are:
- Nitish Kumar’s JDU
- Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP
- HD Deve Gowda’s party
- Chirag Paswan’s LJP
- Jitan Ram Manjhi’s party
- Jayant Chaudhary’s party
- Both JDS MPs from Karnataka will also vote in favor of the bill
All allies have issued a whip to their MPs and directed to be compulsorily present in the House.
BJP’s high level meeting: strategy prepared
An important meeting was held at the residence of BJP President JP Nadda regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. Many senior leaders and ministers were present in the meeting including Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Piyush Goyal. The meeting discussed the final strategy to pass the bill and it was planned to ensure the presence of MPs.
Opposition opposed the bill, asked for 12 hours discussion
The opposition is fully cautious and aggressive about this bill. The coalition of opposition parties, India Block, made a strategy by meeting in Parliament House. The opposition demands that the discussion on this bill should be increased from 8 hours to 12 hours so that every party can get full opportunity to speak.
The parties standing against the bill are included:
- AIADMK of Tamil Nadu
- Naveen Patnaik’s BJD (BJD)
- K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)
All these parties have remained neutral till now, but the Waqf bill is seen standing with the opposition, which can create a new challenge for the government.
Bill was approved by cabinet in February
On 19 February 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the Waqf Amendment Bill. Earlier, Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) was formed on this bill. The JPC report was presented in the first phase of the budget session of Parliament on 13 February.
Headlines:
- On January 30, JPC submitted its 655 -page report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
- At the time of submission of the report, several BJP MPs including JPC President Jagdambika Pal, Nishikant Dubey were present.
- No members of the opposition were present while presenting the report, which made it clear that the opposition has not been in favor of this bill from the beginning.
What is the Waqf Amendment Bill?
The purpose of the Waqf Amendment Bill is to make the administrative processes related to Waqf properties transparent, resolve disputes and prevent illegal occupations. Under this, changes are being made in many legal provisions, which the opposition has objections. The opposition says that this bill may affect the rights of some communities.
