In today’s digital era, cases of online fraud are increasing rapidly. Recently, a 27-year-old woman from Chandigarh fell victim to a similar fraud in which she suffered a loss of about Rs 5.69 lakh in the name of work-form-home. The woman was lured to earn money in exchange for liking on Instagram video. This fraud started through WhatsApp.
How did the fraud begin
On 25 March, the woman received a message on WhatsApp. The sender described himself as Sneha Verma and said that he is associated with a company who gives a chance to earn money by working at home. The woman was told that she can earn four to eight thousand rupees daily by just like a video on Instagram.
The offer sounded easy and attractive to hear, so the woman showed interest. The thugs then sent him a video link and asked him to join the Telegram Group. The woman completed some of the initial tasks, after which her account was shown fake money. This further increased his trust. Then she was told that if she invests, she will get more profit.
How to lose millions of rupees
The woman initially transferred about one and a half lakh rupees to different bank accounts. He was later motivated to invest repeatedly. Gradually, he lost a total of Rs 5.69 lakh. Thugs assured her through a fake app that she was earning good profits. But when the woman wanted to withdraw her “earning”, she was told that first her “score” would have to reach a hundred points, for which she would have to deposit five lakh rupees more.
It was here that the woman suspected and spoke to her family. She then reached the cybercrime police station in Chandigarh and lodged a complaint.
