The fast developing road network system of Uttar Pradesh has got another major achievement. Now vehicles will be able to run at a speed of 120 km per hour on the major expressways of the state-Agra-Lucknow, Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Expressway. This decision was recently taken in the board meeting of Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPDA), which was chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh.
Till now, the maximum speed limit of trains on these expressways was 100 km/h, which has been increased to 120 km/h. This step is considered a major decision towards making the journey on the expressway more fast, convenient and modern.
Which vehicles will get the benefit of speed?
According to Eupida, the speed limit under the new rules has been fixed as follows:
Vehicle category | Old speed limit | New speed limit |
---|---|---|
Passenger vehicle (maximum 8 seats besides driver) | 100 km/h | 120 km/h |
Carts with 9 or more seats | 80 km/h | 100 km/h |
Cargo carrier vehicle and bike | 80 km/h | That will remain |
This simply means that travel time for cars, SUVs, and other light private vehicles will be less, and the journey will become more comfortable and faster than before.
Passengers will get benefit, time will be saved
This decision will provide great benefit to passengers who travel long distances. Now it will take 20-25% less time to travel on routes like Lucknow to Agra, or Varanasi to Lucknow.
- Commercial travel services such as cabs and taxi operators will also benefit from it.
- This speed can become convenient and attractive for Daily Commuters and Tourism Sector.
Why was this decision taken?
It was proposed in the meeting that on the basis of notification of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Ministry, the vehicle speed limit should also be increased in the state. The same proposal was approved by the UPDA Board.
On other high-speed corridors like Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, vehicles are already allowed to run at a speed of 120 km/h. By implementing the same policy in UP too, the roads of the state are now being constructed as per national standards.
Now the invoice will also get relief
Till now, if a car or SUV was caught moving at a speed above 100 km/h, then the challan was cut on it. But now up to 120 km/h will be valid, which will also give relief to the drivers.
However, it is also important to note that:
- Violation of speed limit can still lead to punitive action.
- It will be mandatory to follow the rules of road safety.
Modernity and investment attraction will increase
This step will help in setting up Uttar Pradesh as ‘High-speed Expressway State’. The high speed journey will not only be convenient for common passengers, but will also attract investment in industry, logistics and tourism sectors.
