The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, opened to the public on Wednesday, marking the start of Kashmir’s tourism season
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially opened the garden for public visits this year as tulips of various colors began blooming
The garden attracted over 4.65 lakh visitors in 2023, an increase from 3.65 lakh in the previous year, with both domestic and international tourists showing keen interest
Initially known as Siraj Bagh, the garden was established in 2007 by then J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to extend the region’s tourist season beyond summer and winter
The garden now boasts 74 varieties of tulips, along with other spring flowers such as hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens, creating a vibrant floral showcase
Two new tulip varieties have been introduced, along with a fresh color scheme, while phased planting ensures a prolonged blooming period
The garden, which began with 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from the Netherlands, has gained immense popularity and continues to expand annually in both floral variety and visitor numbers
