Pune: PMPML Records 53,243 Bus Breakdowns In Last 3 Years, 4,118 Reported In 2025 So Far | Sourced
The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) witnessed a total of 53,243 bus breakdowns over the last three years.
According to data obtained by The Free Press Journal, 14,015 PMPML buses broke down in 2022, including 4,067 self-owned and 9,948 leased ones. The number increased in 2023, with 17,784 buses breaking down— 7,134 PMPML-owned and 10,649 leased. In 2024, the situation worsened, with a total of 21,444 breakdowns, including 6,349 self-owned and 15,085 leased buses.

So far, in 2025, 4,118 buses have broken down. As per the data, in January this year, 449 self-owned and 980 leased buses broke down. In February, the numbers were 481 self-owned and 976 leased. In March so far, 349 self-owned and 879 leased buses have broken down.
There seems to be no end in sight for this issue. Activists and commuters have expressed disappointment with the state of the public transport in Pune. On the other hand, the officials blame ageing buses for the problem.
Meanwhile, to address this problem, PMPML has decided to acquire 600 CNG buses. 400 of these will be inducted into the PMPML fleet in April, with the remaining 200 self-owned buses to be inducted by the end of June. Recently, over 250 buses have been removed from the fleet due to the expiry of their lifespan.
