What Was Suman’s Controversial Statement?

Amidst the recent controversy surrounding Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Ramji Lal Suman, during his address in the Rajya Sabha on March 21, brought Rajput ruler Rana Sanga in the gambit, referring to him as a “traitor”.

He said, “BJP leaders often claim that Muslims have the DNA of Babur. But Indian Muslims do not consider Babur their ideal. In fact, who brought Babur to India? It was Rana Sanga who invited him to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. By that logic, if you claim Muslims are the descendants of Babur, then you are also the descendants of Rana Sanga — a traitor. We criticise Babur, but not Rana Sanga.”

Suman’s controversial statement invited heavy criticism from several right wing groups, including the Karni Sena.

Karni Sena Causes Rampage At Suman’s Residence

Karni Sena members gathered in large numbers at Suman’s Kuberpur residence at 12:15 PM on March 26. Despite police’s multiple attempts to stop the convoy on the Agra-Delhi highway using barriers, the workers pushed through the back gate of Suman’s house. Upon reaching, some protestors forcibly entered the premises, vandalising property and breaking glass panes of seven to eight vehicles parked outside. The police resorted to lathi charge, but the protestors continued to chant slogans.

Heavy Police Deployment At Ramji’s Residence

In anticipation of the protest, security around Suman’s house was significantly increased. One of the main gates to his house was closed, and a large police force was stationed at the other. reportedly, additional barriers were also placed at various points, including near the waterworks, to stop the advancing Karni Sena members. Despite the heavy deployment, the situation escalated, forcing the police to take stricter action to control the crowd.
