Navi Mumbai: With temperatures steadily climbing across Maharashtra, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) issued an advisory urging residents to take necessary precautions against heatstroke. Describing heatwaves as a ‘silent disaster,’ the civic body stressed the serious health risks they pose, particularly between March and May.
According to NMMC, a heatwave is classified when temperatures exceed the normal maximum by 3°C for three consecutive days or cross 45°C for two days in a row. To help citizens stay safe, the public health department has outlined key preventive measures.
Preventive Measures Shared By Civic Body
Residents are advised to stay hydrated by drinking ample water and opting for homemade cooling drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices. The advisory also recommends wearing loose, light-colored clothing and using caps, scarves, or umbrellas when stepping outdoors.
To minimize heat exposure, people should avoid direct sunlight between 12 pm and 3 pm, refrain from strenuous activities, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Vulnerable Groups At Risk
NMMC has specifically warned that infants, young children, outdoor workers, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing conditions (such as heart disease or high blood pressure) face a higher risk of heat-related illnesses. Families are urged to monitor elderly or sick individuals who live alone to prevent medical emergencies.
Healthcare Preparedness
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde assured residents that all municipal hospitals and urban health centers are equipped to handle heatstroke cases and are following government-issued protocols. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, excessive sweating or nausea, is advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest NMMC health center.
With temperatures expected to rise further, NMMC has urged the public to stay cautious, follow safety measures, and prioritize their health during the ongoing heatwave season.
