Despite the implementation of fastag for toll tax on national highways and expressways, there is a problem of long queues. To deal with this challenge, the central government is now considering creating an annual pass. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this information in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. He said that this will save the time of passengers and they will not have to get unnecessarily in long lines.

Satellite based barrier-free toll pilot project started

The minister informed that in some places the implementation of satellite-based barrier-free toll system is being tested. Currently it has been started as a pilot project. If it is successful, it will be expanded throughout the country.

Automatic number plate recognition will be toll cut

Gadkari informed that advanced toll system has been implemented on Gharaunda, Chharayasi, Nemili and Dwarka Expressway. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology is being used at these places, which automatically cuts the toll fee without stopping from vehicles.

Transparent toll system and highway monitoring

He informed that information about highway toll fee is made available at the toll plaza and it can also be seen on NHAI’s website. Information of any change is published in newspapers. In addition, Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) has been implemented on 325 national highways, covering the route of about 20,000 km. The government plans to bring all four or more national highways under ATMS.

Satellite -based toll system challenges

Gadkari said that additional satellites would be required to develop a satellite-based toll system, so that the exact location of the vehicles can be tracked. This is a long -term plan and will take time to implement it. The government is currently working in this direction.

If these new plans are successful, then the problem of long queues on toll plazas in future can end completely, which will give passengers to experience fast and smooth travel.
