Mumbai: The Mumbai Unit of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a police constable from MHB police station for allegedly demanding bribe from a person to assist him in an accident case investigated by the police station.

The accused policemen were arrested and produced before a local court which remanded them to two days ACB custody, officials informed on Wednesday. The accused public servants have been identified as ASI Sunil Desai (51) and constable Vikram Shendge (31).

According to the ACB, on March 16, an accident case was registered against the complainant by the MHB police station. In order to help the complainant in the said case and to release his four wheeler ASI Sunil Desai had allegedly demanded a bribe. But since the complainant did not want to pay the bribe, he approached the ACB Mumbai office on Tuesday and gave a written complaint in the matter, officials said.

Based on the complaint, the ACB verified the allegations made by the complainant which revealed that ASI Desai had demanded bribe from the complainant. A trap was laid and Shendge was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20000 from the complainant at the behest of ASI Desai. Later, Desai too was apprehended.

A case has been registered against the duo under sections 7 (offence relating to public servant being bribed) and 12 (punishment for abetment of offences) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
