Mumbai Heat: Green Chilli Prices Tripled, Hike by Rs. 125-150 Per Kilo This Summer | Pinterest
Mumbai: In Mumbai, the price of green chillies has tripled in the wholesale market, particularly in Navi Mumbai. This rise in prices is attributed to the low availability of green chillies due to the city’s extreme heat.
The price hike has been observed in both wholesale and retail markets, with prices increasing threefold compared to normal levels. Previously, green chillies cost around Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 per kilogram, but they are now priced between Rs. 125 to Rs. 160 per kilogram, depending on the quality, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The price of chillies is increasing due to a significant decrease in arrivals to Mumbai. Wholesaler Ram Yadav explained the situation and said, “We are sourcing chilli stock from Nagpur, Gujarat, Palghar, Karnataka, and other regions, but arrivals have dropped by nearly 40 per cent due to reduced production. Rising temperatures are causing much of the arriving stock to spoil during transit. The heat is drying out the chillies, turning them red and significantly impacting their overall quality.” He added that prices are unlikely to decrease anytime soon and could rise further, according to reports.
