The process of linking the voter ID to Aadhaar is going to be accelerated to increase electoral transparency and eliminate fake voters. Like the PAN card, now the Election Commission is working seriously on the plan to link voter ID card to Aadhaar.
There will be an important meeting next week in this connection, which will include the top officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Law Ministry and Aadhaar -issuing UIDAI. The main objective of this step is to identify duplicate and fake voters and make the voter list clean.
Aadhaar-EPIC Linking: Why is it necessary?
According to the report of the Indian Express, after amending the Representation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 in 2021, the Election Commission had voluntarily started the process of collecting Aadhaar numbers from voters.
However, the Election Commission has not yet linked the database of Aadhaar and Voter ID. The purpose of this process was to ensure transparency by removing duplicate registration from the voter list, but it was not mandatory to link Aadhaar.

Important meeting of Election Commission on 18 March
An important meeting will be held on this issue on 18 March, which will include:
- Chief Election Commissioner – Dnyanesh Kumar
- Election Commissioner – Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi
- Union Home Secretary – Govind Mohan
- Secretary of Legislative Department – Rajiv Mani
- CEO of UIDAI – Bhuvanesh Kumar
This meeting is taking place at a time when the Trinamool Congress has raised the issue of voters with the same EPIC number in some states including West Bengal.
Election Commission cleaning on disturbances in EPIC number
The Election Commission has admitted that the same EPIC numbers were re -released in some states for technical reasons. However, the Commission also clarified that having a single EPIC number does not mean that voters are fake.
The Election Commission has announced that voters who have been issued duplicate EPIC numbers will be given new numbers within the next three months.
What will be the effect?
- Fake voting will decrease
- Voter list will be more transparent
- Duplicate registration will help remove
- The election process will be more reliable
Now it will be seen whether Aadhaar will be made mandatory to link to the voter ID or it will be kept voluntary.
