Less than 24 hours after he posed as a customer to steal a gold chain from a showroom in Mira Road, the thief was arrested by a team from the crime branch unit (Zone I) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police. Notably, the accused who has been identified as- Ansh Sahil Raaj (21) was apprehended at Udhna railway station in Surat from an Ahmedabad-bound train, however his accomplice is still at large.

According to the police, Ansh and his accomplice arrived at-Shubh Laxmi Jewelers-a gold ornaments showroom in Mira Road (east) at around 5:15 pm on Wednesday (12, March). Pretending to be a customer looking to buy a gold chain, Ansh entered the showroom. After selecting a chain worth more than Rs.80,000 he told the salesperson that he would show it to his brother-in-law who was waiting outside. Even before the salesperson could react, he rushed outside and both fled on the bike. 

An offence under the relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nya Sanhita for cheating and joint criminal liability was registered at the Mira Road police station against the unidentified duo. On the virtue of footage captured by closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the crime spot and possible getaway routes, supported by electronic surveillance, the team learnt that the accused was travelling to Gujarat in a train.

The police team immediately alerted their railway counterparts in Surat who arrested Ansh as the train arrived at Udhna railway station on Thursday (13, March). 

Investigations revealed his involvement in a couple of other offences like assault and illegal possession of arms registered against him at the Mira Road police station.
