ED action against Congress MLA: The Enforcement Directorate has raided the house of Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira in Punjab. Khaira, MLA from Bholath seat, has been accused of connivance with drug smugglers. The ED has seized a mansion at Chandigarh Sector-5 under the proceedings. The price of which is 2500 rupees. 3.82 crores
Khaira is accused of dealing with drug smuggler Gurdev Singh. The ED gave this information on social media. A case was registered against Congress MLA Khaira under the provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2002.
Relations with smuggler Gurdev Singh
These raids were killed under the NDPS Act in Fazilka district in 2015. Khaira was arrested on 28 September 2023 from his residence in Chandigarh. The ED said that during the investigation by Punjab Police, a total of 1800 grams of heroin, one 315 bore pistol and two cartridges, 2 Pakistani SIM cards, a 32 bore pistol and 24 bullets, 24 gold biscuits were seized from Gurdev Singh. The Fazilka court in its order convicted Gurdev Singh and eight others under various sections of the NDPS Act, 1985. The ED investigation revealed that Sukhpal Singh Khaira had received Rs 100 crore from Gurdev Singh and his foreign associates through the international drug syndicate. Rs 3.82 crore was received. Which was used in election campaign.
No notice received: Khaira
Sukhpal Khaira posted this action of ED by posting on Facebook. He said, “I also came to know from the media that the ED has attached my house in Chandigarh.” I would like to clarify that I have no information about this. In this case neither ED nor any other government source has given me any information. This information is like trauma on my character. The BJP is using ED to trap opposition leaders in the country.
Three times elected MLA
Khaira’s political life has been full of ups and downs. Khaira left the Congress and joined the Aam Aadmi Party. In 2017, he became an MLA on AAP ticket and later the party made him the Leader of the Opposition. However, these days did not last long. The Aam Aadmi Party dismissed him. Khaira joined the Congress in June 2021 and became an MLA twice on a Congress ticket. The Congress gave Khaira a ticket from Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. But he could not win.
