The Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, revealed in a Lok Sabha meeting on Monday that the number of students in 23 IITs has doubled in the past 10 years from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh.

Replying to a query about the government’s move to enhance IIT seats by more than 100 per cent and the consequent infrastructure developments, particularly at IIT Patna and IIT Delhi to take on board an additional 6,500 students, Minister Sukanta Majumdar assured that the 2025-26 Budget has provisions for increasing infrastructure. This will extend to hostel and academic facilities, especially at IIT Patna, and in the five IITs opened after 2014.

The minister also highlighted that IIT Hyderabad (Telangana), IIT Kanpur, IIT-BHU Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), and IIT Patna (Bihar) are operating from their permanent campuses now. For the financial year 2024-25, over Rs 1,830 crore have been sanctioned for these five IITs to aid in their continued development.

Along with IITs, the government is also going to address the increasing need for medical professionals in the nation. As per Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2025, around 10,000 new seats will be added in medical colleges and hospitals next year as part of the target of adding 75,000 seats in the next five years.

IIT Delhi to Host Event for UG and PG Students

The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT D) will organise an event for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students aimed at providing them with a comprehensive understanding of IIT D’s educational curriculum, research initiatives, and admission programs across various domains. The event, titled “Anveshan: Innovation and Exploration Across Disciplines,” will be held on March 22, 2025, at IIT Delhi’s Hauz Khas Campus.
