The 2014 Chhattisgarh Naxal Attack stands as one of the most devastating insurgent strikes in India’s recent history. On March 11, 2014, heavily armed Naxalites ambushed a security convoy in the Jhiram Valley, located in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, resulting in severe casualties.
This was considered one of the most dangerous attacks on Indian security forces as it was done in the daytime. Earlier in Chhattisgarh, in the 2010 Dantewada massacre, 76 CRPF personnel were killed.
What Happened in the 2014 Chhattisgarh Attack?
The devastating attack took place during the time of India’s Lok Sabha election when a convoy of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and state police officers was targeted. Over a hundred men surrounded the CRPF’s jawans when they were sanitising the area for troop movements and also to provide security to road construction workers.
Maoists opened fire, which led to the killing of 15 security personnel and one civilian, and injured three. It lasted for 15 minutes, and Maoists also looted weapons, equipment, and ammunition from the wounded and dead. Among the deceased were 11 CRPF personnel and four state police officers.

The 2014 Chhattisgarh ambush was a stark reminder of the ongoing insurgency in India’s Red Corridor, where Naxalite groups have been active. The attack also highlighted the challenges faced by security forces in combating left-wing extremism (LWE) in remote and dense forested regions.
