Ahmedabad: The Indian smartphone market is now facing a sudden recession. In January this year, exports fell by 9.7 percent year-on-year. According to the IDC, only 11.1 million smartphones were exported in the first month of 2025. Despite the launch of new phones in the middle-grain and premium section, the consumer demand remains weak, causing a decline in exports.

According to the IDC report, ‘Exports declined by 9.7 per cent despite the launch of several new phones in the mid-range and premium segment earlier this year. The market has failed to reach the level of January 2024 in terms of smartphone exports due to surplus production amidst weak consumer demand.

The fourth quarter of 2024 also saw a weak growth in the smartphone market. The shipment fell 3 percent to 36 million units. However, despite the market fall, Apple has continued its growth pace. Apart from Apple’s 11.7 percent annual growth, Oppo also recorded a growth rate of 5.9 percent. Apple is among the top five brands with 11.4 percent market share.
