Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati recently made major changes in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), in which she dropped her nephew from the party. After this development, discussions of change in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal have also intensified.
TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s absence has given rise to speculation from the voter list review meeting held at the party headquarters on Thursday. This meeting was the first meeting of the High Level Committee formed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in which there are many discussions within the party regarding her absence.

TMC meeting and Abhishek Banerjee’s absence
In this meeting of TMC, Abhishek Banerjee had a place after Sabrata Bakshi, but he did not reach the meeting. Some leaders described it as a minor incident, while others questioned it, especially when Mamata Banerjee had already clarified that all election related work would be done from TMC headquarters.
According to sources, Abhishek Banerjee was busy preparing for ‘Sebashraya’ Kalyan Camps, so that he could not attend the meeting. According to reports, he was inspecting these camps at Maheshtal on Wednesday. However, he was present in Kolkata on Thursday, yet did not attend the meeting.
Change of change in TMC
In Thursday’s meeting, TMC leaders were entrusted with the responsibility of investigating the voter list in various districts. Sabrata Bakshi was given the responsibility of South Kolkata and Abhishek Banerjee to South 24 Parganas. Senior party leaders believe that Abhishek’s absence may be a sign of moving towards more decentralization than the party’s central leadership.
Allegations and election strategy on BJP
The meeting was part of the TMC campaign in which the party accused the BJP of making a mess in the election list. TMC leaders met the workers and discussed the results of the door-to-door investigation and claimed that the BJP was connecting fake voters. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also alleged that the BJP has added outsiders to the voter list with the help of the Election Commission, as was done in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi.
TMC met the Chief Electoral Officer of the state and demanded ‘unique ID’ for the voter card to prevent fraud and fake names. Senior party leader Firhad Hakim said, “The BJP is trying to influence the election process in Bengal. Just as there is unique ID for Aadhaar card and passport, so should be for voter card. ”
Election Commission cleaning on election process
The Election Commission has clarified that the voter list update process is completely transparent and the role of booth level officers (BLOS) appointed by political parties is important. However, TMC and other opposition parties have demanded that the names added online should also be conducted physically to prevent any irregularity.
Impact on upcoming elections
These changes in both BSP and TMC can affect the strategy of the upcoming elections. While BSP is focusing on internal reforms, TMC is preparing for an aggressive election campaign against BJP. In such a situation, the next few weeks can be important in the politics of Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
