Not a crime: Supreme Court: The Supreme Court, while hearing a case recently, said that it is not a crime to call someone Mian-Tiya or Pakistani. The court also said that although it could be wrong, it is not a crime under Section 298 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to hurt religious sentiments. Hurting religious sentiments is not a crime under Section 298 of the IPC.
What was the whole matter?
The Supreme Court said that the appellant was accused of hurting the person by calling the person ‘Mian-Tian’ and ‘Pakistani’. A bench of Justice BV Nagaratna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma gave the verdict on 11 February. The accused was accused of calling a government employee ‘Pakistani’ while performing government duty.
