Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A 22-year-old woman died by suicide after allegedly being harassed and blackmailed by her fiancé. The incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior on Monday. Preliminary investigations revealed that she was speaking to him on the phone moments before taking the extreme step.

The body was discovered by the victim’s brother moments after her fiancé informed her brother about the attempted suicide. Police have arrested the accused and charged him with rape and abetment to suicide.

According to information, the woman lived with her uncle’s family in the Bahodapur area in Gwalior, while her parents were in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. She was engaged to Arjun Kushwaha, a resident of Gwalior. On the day of the incident, she locked herself in her room. Shortly after, Arjun called her brother, informing him that she was attempting suicide. The family rushed to her room, broke the door, and found her hanging. She was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

According to the victim’s uncle, Arjun had been harassing her since their engagement two months ago. He had established a physical relationship with her and later blackmailed her. He had also taken money and jewellery from her. When she refused to comply with his demands, he threatened to break off the engagement.

Police Investigations

Prima facie revealed that the allegations levelled at the accused were correct. Police investigations confirmed that the accused had been exploiting the victim financially and emotionally. Following up on the complaint, the accused was arrested, and a case was filed under abetment of suicide and rape. Further investigations are underway.
