Mumbai: The Mumbai University has been caught red faced as the convocation certificates received by students were issued by MU had misspelled their own name as ‘University of Mumabai’ featuring the logo have been sent to numerous affiliated colleges for the graduating class of 2023-24.
Although Mumbai University is recognized for incorrectly spelling students’ names on convocation certificates, this time it has incorrectly spelled its own name. Numerous colleges have either sent back the certificates or are currently in the process of doing so.

The convocation ceremony of Mumbai University took place on January 7. During the 2023-24 academic year, 1.64 lakh students completed their graduation, but it remains uncertain how many have received their degrees featuring the incorrectly spelled university name.
A principal from a city college stated that Mumbai University misspelling its own name is simply embarrassing. Another remarked that the incorrectly spelled name above the logo makes the certificates look fake.
Mumbai University, having outsourced the printing of convocation certificates to a company in Hyderabad, is rectifying the errors. A designated spokesperson stated that certain certificates were released with typographical errors because of printing problems, without detailing the quantities.
A spokesperson has stated that they are “fixing it” and students should be confident that the university will issue new certificates at no extra charge, noting that the university has begun tackling the problem since it was reported, according to Times Of India. He also mentioned that the certificates have not been sent to all colleges yet, and they would send the corrected versions to the other institutes.
In recent years, a principal noted that the frequency of mistakes in convocation certificates has decreased since Mumbai University permits students to check their information and correct any errors before they are sent for printing.
Former Education minister of Maharashtra, Varsha Gaikwad, tweeted about the misspelled logo of Mumbai University expressing disappointment in the quality of work and the suffrage that students have to face for the delay. She stated: :”This is not just an embarrassment but now all these degree certificates will have to be reprinted, which could mean several months delay for students wanting to pursue further qualifications!”
Further she also tagged the minister of higher and technical education, Chandrakant Patil, to look after the mishap and make sure that the students get their required certificated within this month (March). The caption to the X post further reads,” The Mumbai University must issue a public apology to all students and the Minister of Higher & Technical education @ChDadaPatil ji must take University officials to task and ensure the certificates are reissued within this month. Completely irresponsible, unprofessional behaviour from the University, responsible officials must be penalised.” Gaikwad also tagged the official account of the national student union of India.
